Functional description Glossary

Alphabetical paging navigation

Long lists of content are displayed on separate pages based on grouping by first letter of list item name

Navigation between pages exists in form of letter groups (e.g. A-G, H-M, N-S, T-Z)

article listing

Articles related to a given category will appear in the Article Navigation Bar when that category is chosen

When a category is chosen, articles related to it will be displayed

Articles will only "live" in one place (e.g. will only have one category relationship)

Articles will be listed in reverse chronological order based on publication date

Checklists and Breeds will be considered articles for the purpose of this listing

Article navigation will scroll using DHTML if list is longer than accommodated by design

Images will be displayed based on their relatedness to the article being displayed

The space provided for an image will be determined by the image dimension

Cat/Dog mode switcher

When on any page of the site, this function allows the user to switch between Cat and Dog "modes" of the site 

On a Super-Category or Category page, it will switch to the analogous Super-Category or Category page

On an Article page, it will switch to the Category page to which that article is related

If an analogous Category is not available, the graphic link will not appear

Category listing

Categories will be listed in order specified

This order can be modified for rearrangement and for the insertion of new categories

The appropriate Super-category Message Board link will be considered a category for the purpose of this listing

Images will be displayed based on their relatedness to the category being displayed

Category relationship

Display an article’s relationship to its parents (Super-category and Category)

Close window

Selection of this link will close the second browser window

comment entry

Pulls submitted comments into a database

New comments appear on a list for moderator to approve

comments list

A list of comments to a specific article, shown in reverse chronological order 

Comments will be displayed on the site only after they are approved by the moderator

Cookie recognition

If a cookie from a previous visit is detected, the site will present an alternate page or alter the appearance of the page appropriately

Current event

Displays the current month’s events when the "Event" category is chosen

Sends an email to a specified email address

Entry mode choice

Determines which site mode will be displayed until the mode is switched

Events Navigation

Those months to which events are related appear in the article navigation bar in chronological order

Events

All events related to a specific Events category month will be displayed in chronological order

All events with a date that is more than two months past will not be displayed

featured article

The title and summary information of a specifically chosen article to be featured will be displayed

If none is chosen, the article with the most recent publication date will be displayed as the default

Breeds will be considered articles for the purpose of this function

featured finder

The title and summary information of a specifically chosen finder to be featured will be displayed

Featured question

The specifically chosen question will be displayed, appropriate to the current mode

 

finder listing

All finders related to a given "Find It" category under one of the Super-Categories are listed in the Article Navigation Bar

When the Find It category is chosen, only those finders related to the "Find It" category under one of the Super-Categories will be displayed

Finders will only "live" in one place (e.g. will only have one category relationship)

Finders will be listed in order of decreasing percentage relationship to the "Find It" category

Glossary listing

All glossary items related to the Health Glossary page are displayed in alphabetical order, appropriate to current site mode

Content that is longer than can be displayed within the design will be reached by using DHMTL scrolling arrows

Selection of a link will generate a new browser window

pagination

Separation of content into discrete pages, based on maximum amount of content, or number of items, specified for that page

Paging navigation which allows linking to other pages generated

Information submitted from a previous page will be passed into the next page for form field display, but not stored in the database

pass Destination info

Original destination will persist through the log in or registration process so appropriate link is provided

Password verification

Checks user name and password entered, against those found in the database

Questions will be stored in the database for administrative access

question listing

All questions related to the Dr. Reisner Archive are displayed in reverse chronological order, appropriate to current site mode

registration

Creates a new user profile from information entered

Updates information to a previously created profile

registered user info

Information appears in fields based on data from previous user visits

 

related articles

Articles can be related to any other article in the database, but cannot relate articles across mode (e.g. a cat article cannot relate to a dog article, or it will appear in the wrong navigation)

Articles will be listed in order of decreasing percentage relationship to that article

When an article is chosen, the Universal top navigation and Secondary navigation will change to reflect the Super-category, Category and Article Navigation Bar to which that article is related

Checklists and Breeds will be considered articles for the purpose of this listing

Allows user to return to the previous page visited

This will be used exclusively to return to the related Article page from any pages related directly to an Article, such as Comment page and Email Article page

Checklists, Events and Breeds will be considered articles for the purpose of this function

SEARCH

Search looks at mode-specific site content by keyword, title and summary

Search will be limited to chosen Super-category and current site mode

Search results listing

All article titles that satisfy search parameters, displayed in order of relevance

Session variable recognition

If a session variable from the current visit is detected, the site will present an alternate page or alter the appearance of the page appropriately

Set Session variable

Variable is set once the user has logged in or registered during the current session

Once set, it will expire 20 minutes after the user has left the site

set cookie

Cookie is set on the visitor’s computer so that person will be recognized the next time they visit the site

Each side item will consist of or refer to one of the following item types:

Some item types will occupy the space of two boxes; others may take the space of all three 

An item type must always follow the same configuration as specified by the design

Each template will have its own rules, so that the same item type will always be displayed in same position (e.g. all super-category templates will always display a Digging for Facts entry in the first box, a quote in the second box, and an internal ad in the third) 

These rules will need to apply to both Cat and Dog mode for a given template 

Actual side items will need to be specified for each home page and each super-category, and for both the Cat and Dog modes 

Some side items will link to an appropriate page within the site

Internal links will need to be part of the item’s database record

The amount of text allowed will be constrained by the design

Side items for a Super-category will be displayed for all children pages, wherever Side Items appear
